Die mathematische Modellierung von räumlichen oder räumlich/zeitlichen Phänomenen, wie Strömungen, Verfestigung von Schmelzen, Wettervorhersage usw. führt im Allgemeinen zu partiellen Differentialgleichungen. Die Vorlesung wird sich auf elliptische Differentialgleichungen konzentrieren. Im ersten Teil werden Finite-Differenzen-Methoden (FDM) diskutiert. Der grösste Teil der Vorlesung wird sich mit Finite-Element-Methoden (FEM) und ihrer Analysis befassen.

Voraussetzungen zur Teilnahme sind Grundkenntnisse in Analysis (Analysis I-III) und Numerischer Analysis (Numerik I). Kenntnisse in Funktionalanalysis sind hilfreich.

Der Kurs richtet sich auch an Studenten der BMS.

Mathematical modelling of spatial or spatial/temporal phenomena such as flows, solidification of melts, weather prediction, etc. typically leads to partial differential equations (pdes). The course will concentrate on elliptic pdes. In the first part, finite difference methods will be discussed. The main part of the course will focus on finite element methods and their analysis.

Prerequisites for this course are basic knowledge in calculus (Analysis I-III) and Numerical Analysis (Numerik I). Some knowledge in Functional Analysis is useful.

This course is suited for BMS students.
