BCS theory of superconductivity S22
to Whiteboard Site

Description

Welcome to the whiteboard site of the course BCS theory of superconductivity!

The goal of this course is to get to know the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity and to understand how it explains the observed properties of superconductors.

Most of the course closely follows the book Superconductivity of Metals and Alloys' by the P.G. de Gennes. The textbook is available as an e-book via the FU library (see link under "resources").

The topics that will be covered in this lecture are:

  • Fundamental propreties of superconductors
  • Magnetic properties of type-I superconductors
  • Magnetic properties of type-II superconductors
  • Microscopic BCS theory: Variational approach
  • Microscopic BCS theory: Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation
  • Flux quantization and Josephson effect
  • Landau-Ginzburg theory
  • Superconductor proximity effect

Lectures are on Mondays, 2pm-4pm, room 1.1.16. Recitation sections are Mondays, 4pm-6pm, room 1.1.16. On some Mondays, we may have to swap time slots for lecture and recitation section.

Lecture notes, slide presentations, and exercises will be made available via this platform on a weekly basis (see "resources").
