The aim of this seminar is to examine current trends in data management. Among other things, we will look at two up-and-coming topics: Location-based Services (LBS) and Event-based Services (EBS).

Event-based Systems (EBS) are part of many current applications such as business activity monitoring, stock tickers, facility management, data streaming or security. In recent years, the topic has become increasingly important in both industry and science. Current research focuses on various aspects ranging from event detection (incoming data) to triggering reactions. This seminar aims to study some of the current trends in event-based systems with a strong focus on models and design. Location-based Services (LBS) are nowadays often part of daily life through applications such as navigation assistants in public or private transportation. The underlying technology deals with many different aspects, e.g. location determination, information retrieval, privacy protection, spatial algorithms (such as k-nearest neighbors or querying over a time window) . More recently, aspects such as user context and preferences have been taken into account to send more personalized information to users.

A solid background in databases is required, typically a bachelor level database course.
