BCS theory of superconductivity S20
to Whiteboard Site

Description

Welcome to the whiteboard site of the course BCS theory of superconductivity!

The goal of this course is to get to know the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity and to understand how it explains the observed properties of superconductors.

Most of the course closely follows the book Superconductivity of Metals and Alloys' by the P.G. de Gennes. The textbook is available as an e-book via the FU library (see link under "resources").

The topics that will be covered in this lecture are:

  • Fundamental propreties of superconductors
  • Magnetic properties of type-I superconductors
  • Magnetic properties of type-II superconductors
  • Microscopic BCS theory: Variational approach
  • Microscopic BCS theory: Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation
  • Flux quantization and Josephson effect
  • Landau-Ginzburg theory
  • Superconductor proximity effect
  • Topological superconductors

Lecture notes and accompanying slide presentations will be made available via this platform on a weekly basis (see "resources"). You can find questions that test your understanding of the lecture and homework assignments under "assignments". In addition to what is offered via whiteboard, there will be on-line office hours to discuss the lectures and/or reading assignments and the exercises. There is an only forum here.
