With the start of the summer teaching term 2025, we are introducing changes to the way we conduct our research group seminar and organize the supervision process for students writing their bachelor’s or master’s theses in the Human-Centered Computing (HCC) group. The research group seminar is a key component of the supervision process for students working on their bachelor’s or master’s theses with the HCC group. Attendance is mandatory, and we will record participation to ensure consistent involvement.

Time for the Seminar

The seminar takes place from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in room 111 in Königin-Luise Straße 24/26.

We meet on the following dates:

  • 24.04.2025
  • 22.05.2025
  • 19.06.2025
  • 17.07.2025

Preparation for the Seminar

To ensure productive sessions, we ask that students come prepared for each seminar:

  1. Prepare a Brief Update: Be ready to summarize your current progress, any major milestones, and challenges you are facing.
  2. Formulate Questions: Think about specific questions or issues you would like to discuss with the group.
  3. Engage with Peers: Be ready to provide constructive feedback on your peers’ work and contribute actively to discussions.

Goals of the Seminar

The seminar is designed to achieve the following goals:

  • Facilitate Knowledge Sharing: Provide a platform where students can share their progress, challenges, and experiences, benefiting from collective insights.
  • Encourage Peer Collaboration: Build a sense of community among students, encouraging them to learn from and support one another.
  • Streamline the Supervision Process: Address common questions in a shared setting, making the supervision process more efficient and focused.
  • Foster Critical Thinking: Encourage students to critically evaluate their own work and the work of their peers, improving the overall quality of theses.

Structure of the Seminar

Check-In Presentations:

  • Each student will have up to five minutes to present the current status of their thesis.
  • This should include a brief overview of their progress, challenges encountered, and any specific questions they wish to discuss.

Question Collection:

  • During the check-in, we will compile questions and challenges raised by students into a shared list.

Discussion in Plenum:

  • After the check-in, we will discuss the collected questions as a group.

Complex or Time-Intensive Topics:

  • If you have a particularly complex question or topic that requires deeper discussion, you can announce it in advance. These topics will be shared with the group before the seminar, allowing everyone to prepare and contribute to the discussion. Together, we will collaboratively explore possible solutions.

Additional Input from the HCC Team:

  • While the seminar is largely student-driven, the HCC team will, when necessary, provide targeted guidance, insights, or resources to help address more challenging questions.
