This lecture serves as an introduction to spatial databases, particularly those used in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Focal points include the modeling of spatial data, query languages and optimization as well as spatial access methods (indexing) and navigation systems ("location-based services").

Basic knowledge of databases is required. The lecture includes exercise sheets and computer practicals with PostGIS.
