In this proseminar we will discuss a selection of articles that have been published in the Software Engineering in Society Track (ICSE-SEIS) within the last years. Topics include diversity, sustainability or privacy, but always with reference to software engineering.

The students choose one of these articles and prepare a presentation (in German or English) in which they present and discuss it besides two relevant and accessible sources. Attention should be paid to the credibility and relevance of the article / study results. Afterwards, the presentation and the corresponding article will be discussed by the seminar participants.

The content of the presentation and the results of the discussion shall be compiled in an paper. In the best case, this paper will be written in parallel to the preparation of the presentation and will then only be revised - taking into account the feedback of the seminar participants. The paper should contain at least 4 pages of pure text (without graphics; the paper with graphics must be correspondingly longer) and will be handed in at the latest 4 weeks after the presentation.

The proseminar delves more deeply into topics covered in the basic classes taught by the theory group. During the winter semester, we consider advanced topics from the theory of computability and of formal languates (in continuation of "Theory of Computation"); during the summer semester, we talk about algorithms (in continuation of "Algorithms, Data Structures, and Data Abstraction").

Interactive Intelligent Systems (IIS) are interactive systems that use artificial intelligence technologies (e.g., from natural language processing). In this seminar, we are concerned with the design, realization, or evaluation of these systems. We combine the complementary perspectives on interactive intelligent systems by considering the used AI technology, user interaction with the system, or both aspects at once. Interactive Intelligent Systems comprise a wide variety of systems or approaches such as AI-infused systems, recommender systems, mixed-initiative user interfaces, or intelligent agents.

Each term, we deal with another particular topic related to the field of Interactive Intelligent Systems field. However, in any case, we focus on a human-centered perspective. We emphasize the interaction between the technical system and the human user in order to explore existing capabilities and limitations in the field of human-computer interaction.

At the beginning of the semester, we provide a general introduction to this year's particular topic. Building on this, we will explore existing approaches, methods, and implementations in the form of student talks, and create a mindmap of the particular topic collaboratively. Each participant is expected to prepare independently, present, and discuss their topic with the class. Based on the results of the discussion, students have to create a written scientific report, which will be evaluated.

Motivation

Seit 1997 existiert in Berlin ein dreistufiges Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die Durchführung von Volksbegehren und Volksentscheiden. Volksbeteiligungsverfahren gehören zur Gruppe der direktdemokratischen Verfahren und erlauben den Wahlberechtigten, abseits von Wahlen Abstimmungen zu Sachthemen zu initiieren. Hierdurch haben sie die Möglichkeit, direkt politischen Einfluss auszuüben und Themen anzugehen, die vielleicht in der Tagespolitik nicht genügend beachtet wurden.

Volksbeteiligungsverfahren sind daher für die Ausübung des demokratischen Willens der Wahlberechtigten von hoher Bedeutung.

Im Zuge der fast 25-jährigen Geschichte der Berliner Volksbeteiligungsverfahren wurden einige Herausforderungen sichtbar, die bei einer entsprechenden Überwindung demokratieverstärkende Potenziale auslösen könnten.

Eine solche Herausforderung ist die fehlende Transparenz über alle laufenden und bisher durchgeführten Volksbeteiligungsverfahren. Aktuell ist es nur mit riesigem Aufwand möglich, Details über die abgeschlossenen Verfahren zu finden (Ergebnis, Dauer, Anzahl der Unterschriften, …). Ähnlich sieht es bei aktuellen Verfahren aus. Es gibt keine zentrale Anlaufstelle, an der ein Überblick über die laufenden Verfahren abgerufen werden kann. Vielmehr ist man dabei auf die Informationsbereitschaft der Initiatoren angewiesen, die oft weder vollständig noch aktuell ist. Des Weiteren fehlt eine einheitliche Darstellung, da jeder Initiator einen anderen Fokus auf die Informationspräsentation legt.

Diese Situation ist für die Interessierten, unabhängig davon ob es Initiatoren oder Wahlberechtigte sind, problematisch. Wahlberechtige etwa können nicht mit angemessenem Aufwand in Erfahrung bringen, welche Verfahren aktuell durchgeführt werden, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf eine mögliche Mitwirkung hat. Die Initiatoren wiederum müssen viel Aufwand in eine hinreichende Sichtbarkeit investieren. Zugleich haben sie kein umfassendes Verständnis dafür, welche Daten und Information in welcher Form von Interesse sein könnten.

Andere Gruppierungen, wie etwa Medien, würden von einer umfassenden Transparenz ebenso profitieren.

Die Motivation für dieses Softwareprojekt ist daher die wirksame Optimierung der Volksbeteiligungsverfahren des Landes Berlin durch die Herbeiführung von mehr Transparenz. Es ist daher eine Lösung notwendig, die zumindest den Status der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verfahren sichtbar macht. Die wichtigsten Kriterien sind hierbei Vollständigkeit und zentrale sowie einheitliche Verfügbarkeit der Daten.

Inhalte

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung und lauffähige Implementierung einer Webanwendung zur Status-Erfassung und -Visualisierung sowie Nachverfolgung von Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die NGO Mehr Demokratie (https://www.mehr-demokratie.de/).

Bereits im vergangenen Jahr (2021) wurde eine erste Version einer Web- und Mobile-Anwendung im Rahmen eines SW-Projektes und in Zusammenarbeit mit Mehr Demokratie entwickelt. Die Ergebnissoftware bestand aus drei Modulen: 

-          - Frontend WEB

-          - Frontend APP

-          - Backend

Diese Anwendung soll nun fertig entwickelt werden, unter anderem sind Web-Frontend und  Backend zusammenzuführen. Die APP-Frontend wird nach aktuellem Stand nicht benötigt. 

Abschließend soll die lauffähige Implementierung der Lösung in der Systemumgebung von Mehr Demokratie erfolgen. Zu beachten ist, dass bei einem erfolgreichen Projektabschluss Mehr Demokratie mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zur bedeutendsten Informationsquelle für Partizipationsverfahren mit entsprechender Sichtbarkeit aufsteigen würde. Aus diesen Gründen sind die Sicherheitsaspekte der Implementierung besonders zu beachten.   

Als Vorbereitung für die Entwicklungsarbeiten ist eine IST-Analyse bei Mehr Demokratie durchzuführen, um die technischen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen zu verstehen und die Softwareentwicklung danach ausrichten zu können.

Bezogen auf die Software ist zu beachten, dass die hierfür relevanten Daten über die einzelnen Volksbeteiligungsverfahren nicht automatisiert importiert werden können. Vielmehr sind sie manuell von den Usern (Initiatoren) einzupflegen. Ein entsprechendes Rechtemanagement soll dafür sorgen, dass die User über ein einheitliches Eingabeformular die notwendigen Daten eingeben und ihr eigenes Verfahren managen können. Des Weiteren soll es den Usern möglich sein, entsprechende Unterlagen und Nachweise hochzuladen und ihren Verfahren zuzuordnen (Dokumentenmanagement).

Die eingegebenen Daten sind dann in weiterer Folge einheitlich und automatisiert zu visualisieren. Auf der Ebene der einzelnen Verfahren wird eine möglichst detaillierte Darstellung (analog zu einem Schaltplan) benötigt, in welcher der Status für alle relevanten Zwischenschritte des Verfahrens dargelegt ist.

Übergeordnet sind sinnvolle Dashboards und Reports zu überlegen, welche Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge aufzeigen.

Außerdem sollen Interessenten in der Lage sein, für sie bedeutsame Verfahren zu verfolgen und bei Statusänderungen automatisch informiert werden (WebAlert-Funktion).

Die Auswahl der richtigen Technologie im Hinblick auf leichte wart- und Erweiterbarkeit (unter Nutzung von Open-Source-Komponenten) ist ebenso bedeutsam wie die Auswahl von Lizenzmodellen (Software, Daten, …), die eine Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung nicht beeinträchtigen. Ähnlich relevant ist eine umfassende und detaillierte Dokumentation der Software.

Einige der beschriebenen Funktionen sind bereits entwickelt, müssen aber evaluiert und ggf. angepasst werden.

Angestrebt wird im Anschluss an das Projektende die Überführung der Lösung in die Gemeinnützigkeit, wodurch zukünftige Volksbeteiligungsverfahren in Berlin hiervon profitieren würden.

Gute Programmierkenntnisse, Einführung in Datenbanksysteme.

Mixed groups of master and bachelor students will either implement an independent project or are part of a larger project in the area of artifical intelligence and semantic AI technologies. They will gain in-depth programming knowledge about applications of semantic technologies and artificial intelligence techniques in the Corporate Semantic Web. They will practice teamwork and best practices in software development of large distributed systems and Semantic Web applications. The software project can be done in collaboration with an external partner from industry or standardization. It is possible to continue the project as bachelor or master thesis.

Topic of the software project in WS22/23: Further development of a demonstrator for AI methods to recognize online hate speech.

This course teaches agile methods (Scrum and XP) and open source tools using a single semester-long project. It takes place online and across multiple universities.

Topics covered are:

• Agile methods and related software development processes
• Scrum roles, process practices, including product and engineering management
• Technical practices like refactoring, continuous integration, and test-driven development
• Principles and best practices of open source software development

The project is a software development project in which each student team works with an industry partner who provides the idea for the project. This is a practical hands-on experience. Students take on the role of a software developer. In this role, they estimate and evaluate the effort of requirements and implement them in the project.

Students will be organized into teams of 7-8 people, combining product owners with software developers. An industry partner will provide requirements to be worked out in detail by the product owners and to be realized by the software developers. The available projects will be presented in the run-up to the course.

The course consists of 90min lectures (participation voluntary) followed by a 90min team meeting (participation mandatory).

Coding IxD: Designing Neoanalog Artefacts

In this course, we co-educate computer scientists and product designers. Beyond experiencing interdisciplinary work, we want students to envision interactive systems that are intelligent: by this, we mean an intelligence through code that is carefully using material, form, and context, while profoundly respecting both human capabilities and vulnerabilities.

We understand this course as experimental space, where different perspectives meet, exchange, and evolve. Each semester, based on small project teams of up to five members, students are challenged to examine a specific application context. Within this context, the teams envision a new application or product concept.

We guide this process through various carefully tuned methods that are used to spark their ideas. Students iterate through several rounds of ideation and refine their concept in different prototype versions. The most compelling or promising interaction concept, the one that allows grasping the quality and essence of the product concept is implemented in a working prototype.

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced designers and computer scientists but also by guest experts that provide feedback to the various design iterations. If needed, special workshops are organized to cover specific topics ranging from prototyping to project management. The whole course is evaluated continuously to enhance our methodological toolbox.

This course offering is a cooperation of the r Human-Centered Computing Research Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Product Design Department at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (KHB).

Description:

This seminar covers different topics from the research area of autonomous cars. We will focus on questions which can be the basis for Bachelor or Master theses as:

vision based person or vehicle recognition, map generation from trajectories, V2V and V2X communication, object tracking and prediction, sensory data fusion, localization using map matching, recognition of drivable areas and free spaces using stereo vision, path planning with A*, RRT, potential fields, automatic sensor calibration, map data formats.

Students can propose interesting topics, too. The seminar will be taught as a block course.

When studying Computer Science at university you mainly focus on concepts. This approach generally makes sense as these conceps are far more persistent and applicable in a broader sense than concrete details would be. Many details, however, which are important for concrete software development, are falling by the wayside. The course is supposed to reduce this deficit.

In it we mainly focus on concepts too, but always only on those which directly have to do with software development, and make sure to apply them precisely, personally in practice -- reflecting its use jointly (something which distinguisdes this course from most other software projects).

The concepts dealt with and practiced may be assigned to three different but closeky connected spheres:

• software development and structuring (object-oriented) Softwareentwurf und -strukturierung (und zwar objektorientiert)
• approaches (for example in the areas prototyping, automatisation, incremental improvement)
• personality development (aspects like consistency, responsibility, communicational skills)

Important: Each participant needs to have a software project of his/her own, which has been started far in advance or the course (within a company, for founding a company or as an open source project), on which he/she works on a weekly basis for the entire duration of the course (mainly in a team) and which serves as training ground for the concepts.

This is a hard prerequisite for participation.

Coding IxD: Designing Neoanalog Artefacts

In this course, we co-educate computer scientists and product designers. Beyond experiencing interdisciplinary work, we want students to envision interactive systems that are intelligent: by this, we mean an intelligence through code that is carefully using material, form, and context, while profoundly respecting both human capabilities and vulnerabilities.

We understand this course as experimental space, where different perspectives meet, exchange, and evolve. Each semester, based on small project teams of up to five members, students are challenged to examine a specific application context. Within this context, the teams envision a new application or product concept.

We guide this process through various carefully tuned methods that are used to spark their ideas. Students iterate through several rounds of ideation and refine their concept in different prototype versions. The most compelling or promising interaction concept, the one that allows grasping the quality and essence of the product concept is implemented in a working prototype.

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced designers and computer scientists but also by guest experts that provide feedback to the various design iterations. If needed, special workshops are organized to cover specific topics ranging from prototyping to project management. The whole course is evaluated continuously to enhance our methodological toolbox.

This course offering is a cooperation of the r Human-Centered Computing Research Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Product Design Department at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (KHB).

Besides the regular weekly meetings, the KHB provides complimentary workshops each Monday from 10 AM to 1 PM where participation for computer science students is optional.

Worst-case analysis of algorithms is one of the cornerstones of theoretical computer science. At the same time, there is a growing discrepancy between the theoretical worst-case guarantees we can prove and the practical performance of algorithms observed on real inputs. This is particularly true in fields such as machine learning, SAT solving, and numerical optimization, where problems known to be hard in the worst-case are routinely solved to great effect on large real-world inputs.

In this seminar, we look at different strategies for dealing with this situation, and more fine-grained and nuanced techniques for the analysis of algorithms. The discussions will be mostly based on chapters of the recent book: "Beyond the Worst-Case Analysis of Algorithms" by T. Roughgarden, Cambridge University Press, 2020.

In this proseminar we will discuss a selection of articles that have been published in the Software Engineering in Society Track (ICSE-SEIS) within the last years. Topics include diversity, sustainability or privacy, but always with reference to software engineering.

The students choose one of these articles and prepare a presentation (in German or English) in which they present and discuss it besides two relevant and accessible sources. Attention should be paid to the credibility and relevance of the article / study results. Afterwards, the presentation and the corresponding article will be discussed by the seminar participants.

The content of the presentation and the results of the discussion shall be compiled in an paper. In the best case, this paper will be written in parallel to the preparation of the presentation and will then only be revised - taking into account the feedback of the seminar participants. The paper should contain at least 4 pages of pure text (without graphics; the paper with graphics must be correspondingly longer) and will be handed in at the latest 4 weeks after the presentation.

Interactive Intelligent Systems (IIS) are interactive systems that use artificial intelligence technologies (e.g., from natural language processing). In this seminar, we are concerned with the design, realization, or evaluation of these systems. We combine the complementary perspectives on interactive intelligent systems by considering the used AI technology, user interaction with the system, or both aspects at once. Interactive Intelligent Systems comprise a wide variety of systems or approaches such as AI-infused systems, recommender systems, mixed-initiative user interfaces, or intelligent agents.

Each term, we deal with another particular topic related to the field of Interactive Intelligent Systems field. However, in any case, we focus on a human-centered perspective. We emphasize the interaction between the technical system and the human user in order to explore existing capabilities and limitations in the field of human-computer interaction.

At the beginning of the semester, we provide a general introduction to this year's particular topic. Building on this, we will explore existing approaches, methods, and implementations in the form of student talks, and create a mindmap of the particular topic collaboratively. Each participant is expected to prepare independently, present, and discuss their topic with the class. Based on the results of the discussion, students have to create a written scientific report, which will be evaluated.

Explainable AI is a recent and growing subfield of machine learning (ML) that aims to bring transparency into ML models without sacrificing their predictive accuracy. This seminar will explore current research on the use of Explainable AI for extracting insights from large datasets of interest. Use cases in biomedicine, chemistry and earth sciences will be covered.

Students will select a few papers from a pool of thematically relevant research papers, which they will read and present over the course of the semester.

Numerous real-world processes require close monitoring by humans and machine learning (ML) models in order to verify calibration/stability and detect potential shifts/anomalies. The real-time nature of such tasks brings unique challenges from a ML perspective. This seminar will explore relevant ML aspects such as online learning, real-time data visualization, and energy efficiency. Use cases in manufacturing and intensive care will be covered.

Students will select a few papers from a pool of thematically relevant research papers, which they will read and present over the course of the semester.

This seminar focuses on recent advances in unsupervised learning, an increasingly important field within machine learning. In unsupervised learning, we use the data itself rather than additional output labels to define a training objective, such as completing a given text sequence or filling in an image region. This way we can learn powerful representations, and stable generative paths. We will discuss new UL methods such as CLIP, DALLE, and FLAMINGO that combine language and image models in joint represenatations.

This seminar aims at studying recent trends in data management. Among others, we will look at two emerging topics, namely Location-Based Services (LBS) and Event-Based Services (EBS).

Event-based Systems (EBS) are part of many current applications such as business activity monitoring, stock tickers, facility management, data streaming, or security. In the past years, the topic has gained increasing attention from both the industrial and the academic community. Current research concentrates of diverse aspects that range from event capture (incoming data) to response triggering. This seminar aims at studying some of the current trends in Event-based Systems with a strong focus on models and design. Location-based services are now often part of every day's life through applications such as navigation assistants in the public or private transportation domain. The underlying technology deals with many different aspects, such as location detection, information retrieval, or privacy. More recently, aspects such as user context and preferences were considered in order to send users more personalized information.

A solid background in databases is required, typically a database course at a bachelor level.

This is a reseach seminar: normally the presentations are supposed to advance current research projects. Thus, there are, generally speaking, three possible types of topics:

• published or current research projects from one of the areas in which our software engineering group works

• basis topics from important areas of software engineering or adjacent disciplines such as psychology, sociology, pedagogics, economics as well as their methods.

This seminar covers different topics from the research area of autonomous cars. We will focus on questions which can be the basis for Bachelor or Master theses as:

vision based person or vehicle recognition, map generation from trajectories, V2V and V2X communication, object tracking and prediction, sensory data fusion, localization using map matching, recognition of drivable areas and free spaces using stereo vision, path planning with A*, RRT, potential fields, automatic sensor calibration, map data formats.

Recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) has emerged as a valuable tool in the field of communication and signal processing. It is therefore natural to extend the investigations to the field of physical layer security and privacy. This field is still in its infancy with some very preliminary results on wiretap channel code design, feature extraction of wireless channels and a growing part of contributions to privacy-preserving, distributed AI/ML. This seminar will teach the latest advances and synergies between the broad fields of AI/ML and secure communications.

This seminar focuses on several aspects of technical Computer Science. At the start of the seminar you will receive a list of suggested topics that mainly deal with particular aspects of the so-called Trusted Computing and security issues in the Internet of Things. You are also very welcome to suggest your own research topic that is closely related to technical Computer Science. You can work on your topic exclusively or in a small group of 2-3 students. But then, it has to be apparent who contributed what part to the seminar paper.

It is possible to combine this seminar with the software project Telematics. Then, the theoretical foundations of the topic are dealt with in the scientific seminar paper and implemented in practice in the software project. Please note that the seminar paper is not supposed to deal with details of the implementation and that you are still obliged to write an accurate documentation of the software project in written form. 

Concerning the schedule: This seminar takes place during the semester. There are only a few meetings, but these are mandatory. On the first meeting (03.11.2020), the topic list will be handed out and discussed. Please prepare a short (2-3 minutes) overview of your own topic suggestion if you would like to include it in the seminar. On the next week (10.11.2020), the topics will be assigned. After that there will be 3 presentation dates in total: the topic presentation (01.12.2021), a short interim presentation (12.01.2021) and the final presentation (23.02.2021). There will be no further meetings beyond that. This semester, all meetings will take place as video conferences with Webex.

Seminar Technische Informatik on Internet of Things & Security

In large part, the Internet of Things (IoT) will consist of interconnecting low-end devices with very small memory capacity (a few kBytes) and limited energy consumption (1000 times less than a RaspberryPi).
The IoT promises a new world of applications, but also brings up specific challenges in terms of programmability, energy efficiency, networking and security.
After an introductory session at the start of the term, MSc students will pick a topic related to current technologies in the field of Internet of Things & Security, and write a report (IEEE LaTex template, 12 A4 pages including figures and references, single column, 1.5 spacing, 11-point font) discussing corresponding questions. At the end of the term, the participants present their results in the form a short talk (20 minutes + 10 minutes Q&A) in a meeting, which will also include cross-reviewing of student's reports. During the term, there will be deadlines for status reports, but no weekly meetings of the complete seminar group.

In this proseminar we will discuss a selection of articles that have been published in the Software Engineering in Society Track (ICSE-SEIS) within the last years. Topics include diversity, sustainability or privacy, but always with reference to software engineering.

The students choose one of these articles and prepare a presentation (in German or English) in which they present and discuss it besides two relevant and accessible sources. Attention should be paid to the credibility and relevance of the article / study results. Afterwards, the presentation and the corresponding article will be discussed by the seminar participants.

The content of the presentation and the results of the discussion shall be compiled in an paper. In the best case, this paper will be written in parallel to the preparation of the presentation and will then only be revised - taking into account the feedback of the seminar participants. The paper should contain at least 4 pages of pure text (without graphics; the paper with graphics must be correspondingly longer) and will be handed in at the latest 4 weeks after the presentation.

Interactive Intelligent Systems (IIS) are interactive systems that use artificial intelligence technologies (e.g., from natural language processing). In this seminar, we are concerned with the design, realization, or evaluation of these systems. We combine the complementary perspectives on interactive intelligent systems by considering the used AI technology, user interaction with the system, or both aspects at once. Interactive Intelligent Systems comprise a wide variety of systems or approaches such as AI-infused systems, recommender systems, mixed-initiative user interfaces, or intelligent agents.

Each term, we deal with another particular topic related to the field of Interactive Intelligent Systems field. However, in any case, we focus on a human-centered perspective. We emphasize the interaction between the technical system and the human user in order to explore existing capabilities and limitations in the field of human-computer interaction.

At the beginning of the semester, we provide a general introduction to this year's particular topic. Building on this, we will explore existing approaches, methods, and implementations in the form of student talks, and create a mindmap of the particular topic collaboratively. Each participant is expected to prepare independently, present, and discuss their topic with the class. Based on the results of the discussion, students have to create a written scientific report, which will be evaluated.

Motivation

Seit 1997 existiert in Berlin ein dreistufiges Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die Durchführung von Volksbegehren und Volksentscheiden. Volksbeteiligungsverfahren gehören zur Gruppe der direktdemokratischen Verfahren und erlauben den Wahlberechtigten, abseits von Wahlen Abstimmungen zu Sachthemen zu initiieren. Hierdurch haben sie die Möglichkeit, direkt politischen Einfluss auszuüben und Themen anzugehen, die vielleicht in der Tagespolitik nicht genügend beachtet wurden.

Volksbeteiligungsverfahren sind daher für die Ausübung des demokratischen Willens der Wahlberechtigten von hoher Bedeutung.

Im Zuge der fast 25-jährigen Geschichte der Berliner Volksbeteiligungsverfahren wurden einige Herausforderungen sichtbar, die bei einer entsprechenden Überwindung demokratieverstärkende Potenziale auslösen könnten.

Eine solche Herausforderung ist die fehlende Transparenz über alle laufenden und bisher durchgeführten Volksbeteiligungsverfahren. Aktuell ist es nur mit riesigem Aufwand möglich, Details über die abgeschlossenen Verfahren zu finden (Ergebnis, Dauer, Anzahl der Unterschriften, …). Ähnlich sieht es bei aktuellen Verfahren aus. Es gibt keine zentrale Anlaufstelle, an der ein Überblick über die laufenden Verfahren abgerufen werden kann. Vielmehr ist man dabei auf die Informationsbereitschaft der Initiatoren angewiesen, die oft weder vollständig noch aktuell ist. Des Weiteren fehlt eine einheitliche Darstellung, da jeder Initiator einen anderen Fokus auf die Informationspräsentation legt.

Diese Situation ist für die Interessierten, unabhängig davon ob es Initiatoren oder Wahlberechtigte sind, problematisch. Wahlberechtige etwa können nicht mit angemessenem Aufwand in Erfahrung bringen, welche Verfahren aktuell durchgeführt werden, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf eine mögliche Mitwirkung hat. Die Initiatoren wiederum müssen viel Aufwand in eine hinreichende Sichtbarkeit investieren. Zugleich haben sie kein umfassendes Verständnis dafür, welche Daten und Information in welcher Form von Interesse sein könnten.

Andere Gruppierungen, wie etwa Medien, würden von einer umfassenden Transparenz ebenso profitieren.

Die Motivation für dieses Softwareprojekt ist daher die wirksame Optimierung der Volksbeteiligungsverfahren des Landes Berlin durch die Herbeiführung von mehr Transparenz. Es ist daher eine Lösung notwendig, die zumindest den Status der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verfahren sichtbar macht. Die wichtigsten Kriterien sind hierbei Vollständigkeit und zentrale sowie einheitliche Verfügbarkeit der Daten.

Inhalte

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung und lauffähige Implementierung einer Webanwendung zur Status-Erfassung und -Visualisierung sowie Nachverfolgung von Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die NGO Mehr Demokratie (https://www.mehr-demokratie.de/).

Bereits im vergangenen Jahr (2021) wurde eine erste Version einer Web- und Mobile-Anwendung im Rahmen eines SW-Projektes und in Zusammenarbeit mit Mehr Demokratie entwickelt. Die Ergebnissoftware bestand aus drei Modulen: 

-          - Frontend WEB

-          - Frontend APP

-          - Backend

Diese Anwendung soll nun fertig entwickelt werden, unter anderem sind Web-Frontend und  Backend zusammenzuführen. Die APP-Frontend wird nach aktuellem Stand nicht benötigt. 

Abschließend soll die lauffähige Implementierung der Lösung in der Systemumgebung von Mehr Demokratie erfolgen. Zu beachten ist, dass bei einem erfolgreichen Projektabschluss Mehr Demokratie mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zur bedeutendsten Informationsquelle für Partizipationsverfahren mit entsprechender Sichtbarkeit aufsteigen würde. Aus diesen Gründen sind die Sicherheitsaspekte der Implementierung besonders zu beachten.   

Als Vorbereitung für die Entwicklungsarbeiten ist eine IST-Analyse bei Mehr Demokratie durchzuführen, um die technischen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen zu verstehen und die Softwareentwicklung danach ausrichten zu können.

Bezogen auf die Software ist zu beachten, dass die hierfür relevanten Daten über die einzelnen Volksbeteiligungsverfahren nicht automatisiert importiert werden können. Vielmehr sind sie manuell von den Usern (Initiatoren) einzupflegen. Ein entsprechendes Rechtemanagement soll dafür sorgen, dass die User über ein einheitliches Eingabeformular die notwendigen Daten eingeben und ihr eigenes Verfahren managen können. Des Weiteren soll es den Usern möglich sein, entsprechende Unterlagen und Nachweise hochzuladen und ihren Verfahren zuzuordnen (Dokumentenmanagement).

Die eingegebenen Daten sind dann in weiterer Folge einheitlich und automatisiert zu visualisieren. Auf der Ebene der einzelnen Verfahren wird eine möglichst detaillierte Darstellung (analog zu einem Schaltplan) benötigt, in welcher der Status für alle relevanten Zwischenschritte des Verfahrens dargelegt ist.

Übergeordnet sind sinnvolle Dashboards und Reports zu überlegen, welche Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge aufzeigen.

Außerdem sollen Interessenten in der Lage sein, für sie bedeutsame Verfahren zu verfolgen und bei Statusänderungen automatisch informiert werden (WebAlert-Funktion).

Die Auswahl der richtigen Technologie im Hinblick auf leichte wart- und Erweiterbarkeit (unter Nutzung von Open-Source-Komponenten) ist ebenso bedeutsam wie die Auswahl von Lizenzmodellen (Software, Daten, …), die eine Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung nicht beeinträchtigen. Ähnlich relevant ist eine umfassende und detaillierte Dokumentation der Software.

Einige der beschriebenen Funktionen sind bereits entwickelt, müssen aber evaluiert und ggf. angepasst werden.

Digitization stops at no one. But how do NGOs, associations or similar organizations without a large IT department actually digitize themselves? Are they forced to follow the big tech companies or are there alternatives?

In this software project we want to digitalize an area together with clubs of the German Alpine Association (DAV) or their youth.
An important aspect in the association is the rental of mountain sports equipment for the members and we want to support this area digitally.

As cooperation partners the (J)DAV Sektion Konstanz as well as the (J)DAV Sektion Berlin are ready and willing to use our IT solution.

The task is to create a web application with backend for rental, maintenance and inventory of mountaineering equipment. There are some special features, such as special requirements for the rental of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as ropes or helmets.
The process so far is illustrated by means of personas and use cases and allows an immediate start into the project.

Depending on the group size and progress in the project, we will additionally look at optional topics. This includes, for example:

* Developing an app for Android and iOS.
* Design and testing of marking of mountaineering equipment using QR codes and NFC chips.
* Recognition of QR codes and NFC chips and their information processing.
* Creation of a knowledge database with information from manufacturers of mountain sports equipment (using web crawling).
* Developing alternative solutions without a web server.

The software project will be characterized by collaboration with the appropriate partners and agile software development. A big challenge is to develop a secure, maintainable solution that fits into the IT infrastructure of an association without a large IT department. An open source license (e.g. MIT, BSD) is proposed for further development after the software project and for use.

Mixed groups of master and bachelor students will either implement an independent project or are part of a larger project in the area of artifical intelligence and semantic AI technologies. They will gain in-depth programming knowledge about applications of semantic technologies and artificial intelligence techniques in the Corporate Semantic Web. Digitization stops at no one. But how do NGOs, associations or similar organizations without a large IT department actually digitize themselves? Are they forced to follow the big tech companies or are there alternatives?

In this software project we want to digitalize an area together with clubs of the German Alpine Association (DAV) or their youth.
An important aspect in the association is the rental of mountain sports equipment for the members and we want to support this area digitally.

As cooperation partners the (J)DAV Sektion Konstanz as well as the (J)DAV Sektion Berlin are ready and willing to use our IT solution.

The task is to create a web application with backend for rental, maintenance and inventory of mountaineering equipment. There are some special features, such as special requirements for the rental of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as ropes or helmets.
The process so far is illustrated by means of personas and use cases and allows an immediate start into the project.

Depending on the group size and progress in the project, we will additionally look at optional topics. This includes, for example:

* Developing an app for Android and iOS.
* Design and testing of marking of mountaineering equipment using QR codes and NFC chips.
* Recognition of QR codes and NFC chips and their information processing.
* Creation of a knowledge database with information from manufacturers of mountain sports equipment (using web crawling).
* Developing alternative solutions without a web server.

The software project will be characterized by collaboration with the appropriate partners and agile software development. A big challenge is to develop a secure, maintainable solution that fits into the IT infrastructure of an association without a large IT department. An open source license (e.g. MIT, BSD) is proposed for further development after the software project and for use.

The technologies used will be:

The schedule will be as follows for organizational reasons:

Coding IxD: Designing Neoanalog Artefacts

In this course, we co-educate computer scientists and product designers. Beyond experiencing interdisciplinary work, we want students to envision interactive systems that are intelligent: by this, we mean an intelligence through code that is carefully using material, form, and context, while profoundly respecting both human capabilities and vulnerabilities.

We understand this course as experimental space, where different perspectives meet, exchange, and evolve. Each semester, based on small project teams of up to five members, students are challenged to examine a specific application context. Within this context, the teams envision a new application or product concept.

We guide this process through various carefully tuned methods that are used to spark their ideas. Students iterate through several rounds of ideation and refine their concept in different prototype versions. The most compelling or promising interaction concept, the one that allows grasping the quality and essence of the product concept is implemented in a working prototype.

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced designers and computer scientists but also by guest experts that provide feedback to the various design iterations. If needed, special workshops are organized to cover specific topics ranging from prototyping to project management. The whole course is evaluated continuously to enhance our methodological toolbox.

This course offering is a cooperation of the r Human-Centered Computing Research Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Product Design Department at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (KHB).

Mixed groups of master and bachelor students will either implement an independent project or are part of a larger project in the area of artifical intelligence and semantic AI technologies. They will gain in-depth programming knowledge about applications of semantic technologies and artificial intelligence techniques in the Corporate Semantic Web. They will practice teamwork and best practices in software development of large distributed systems and Semantic Web applications. This course deals with the consequences of computer science. Its aim is to establish an understanding of the fact that computer systems intervene in manifold ways in our private and professional lifes and shapen them. Many of these influences bring about major risks and need a conscious and enlightened composition in which computer scientists by nature play an important role -- or should at least do so.

We will for example have a look at how computerisation influences our private sphere, economics and society as a whole, our security and working environment. A conceptual introduction will provide orientational knowledge besides basic knowledge (Verfügungswissen) and strategies how to deal with both: analyse critically and get involved in the technical development.

Motivation

Seit 1997 existiert in Berlin ein dreistufiges Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die Durchführung von Volksbegehren und Volksentscheiden. Volksbeteiligungsverfahren gehören zur Gruppe der direktdemokratischen Verfahren und erlauben den Wahlberechtigten, abseits von Wahlen Abstimmungen zu Sachthemen zu initiieren. Hierdurch haben sie die Möglichkeit, direkt politischen Einfluss auszuüben und Themen anzugehen, die vielleicht in der Tagespolitik nicht genügend beachtet wurden.

Volksbeteiligungsverfahren sind daher für die Ausübung des demokratischen Willens der Wahlberechtigten von hoher Bedeutung.

Im Zuge der fast 25-jährigen Geschichte der Berliner Volksbeteiligungsverfahren wurden einige Herausforderungen sichtbar, die bei einer entsprechenden Überwindung demokratieverstärkende Potenziale auslösen könnten.

Eine solche Herausforderung ist die fehlende Transparenz über alle laufenden und bisher durchgeführten Volksbeteiligungsverfahren. Aktuell ist es nur mit riesigem Aufwand möglich, Details über die abgeschlossenen Verfahren zu finden (Ergebnis, Dauer, Anzahl der Unterschriften, …). Ähnlich sieht es bei aktuellen Verfahren aus. Es gibt keine zentrale Anlaufstelle, an der ein Überblick über die laufenden Verfahren abgerufen werden kann. Vielmehr ist man dabei auf die Informationsbereitschaft der Initiatoren angewiesen, die oft weder vollständig noch aktuell ist. Des Weiteren fehlt eine einheitliche Darstellung, da jeder Initiator einen anderen Fokus auf die Informationspräsentation legt.

Diese Situation ist für die Interessierten, unabhängig davon ob es Initiatoren oder Wahlberechtigte sind, problematisch. Wahlberechtige etwa können nicht mit angemessenem Aufwand in Erfahrung bringen, welche Verfahren aktuell durchgeführt werden, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf eine mögliche Mitwirkung hat. Die Initiatoren wiederum müssen viel Aufwand in eine hinreichende Sichtbarkeit investieren. Zugleich haben sie kein umfassendes Verständnis dafür, welche Daten und Information in welcher Form von Interesse sein könnten.

Andere Gruppierungen, wie etwa Medien, würden von einer umfassenden Transparenz ebenso profitieren.

Die Motivation für dieses Softwareprojekt ist daher die wirksame Optimierung der Volksbeteiligungsverfahren des Landes Berlin durch die Herbeiführung von mehr Transparenz. Es ist daher eine Lösung notwendig, die zumindest den Status der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verfahren sichtbar macht. Die wichtigsten Kriterien sind hierbei Vollständigkeit und zentrale sowie einheitliche Verfügbarkeit der Daten.

Inhalte

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung und lauffähige Implementierung einer Webanwendung zur Status-Erfassung und -Visualisierung sowie Nachverfolgung von Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die NGO Mehr Demokratie (https://www.mehr-demokratie.de/).

Bereits im vergangenen Jahr (2021) wurde eine erste Version einer Web- und Mobile-Anwendung im Rahmen eines SW-Projektes und in Zusammenarbeit mit Mehr Demokratie entwickelt. Die Ergebnissoftware bestand aus drei Modulen: 

-          - Frontend WEB

-          - Frontend APP

-          - Backend

Diese Anwendung soll nun fertig entwickelt werden, unter anderem sind Web-Frontend und  Backend zusammenzuführen. Die APP-Frontend wird nach aktuellem Stand nicht benötigt. 

Abschließend soll die lauffähige Implementierung der Lösung in der Systemumgebung von Mehr Demokratie erfolgen. Zu beachten ist, dass bei einem erfolgreichen Projektabschluss Mehr Demokratie mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zur bedeutendsten Informationsquelle für Partizipationsverfahren mit entsprechender Sichtbarkeit aufsteigen würde. Aus diesen Gründen sind die Sicherheitsaspekte der Implementierung besonders zu beachten.   

Als Vorbereitung für die Entwicklungsarbeiten ist eine IST-Analyse bei Mehr Demokratie durchzuführen, um die technischen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen zu verstehen und die Softwareentwicklung danach ausrichten zu können.

Bezogen auf die Software ist zu beachten, dass die hierfür relevanten Daten über die einzelnen Volksbeteiligungsverfahren nicht automatisiert importiert werden können. Vielmehr sind sie manuell von den Usern (Initiatoren) einzupflegen. Ein entsprechendes Rechtemanagement soll dafür sorgen, dass die User über ein einheitliches Eingabeformular die notwendigen Daten eingeben und ihr eigenes Verfahren managen können. Des Weiteren soll es den Usern möglich sein, entsprechende Unterlagen und Nachweise hochzuladen und ihren Verfahren zuzuordnen (Dokumentenmanagement).

Die eingegebenen Daten sind dann in weiterer Folge einheitlich und automatisiert zu visualisieren. Auf der Ebene der einzelnen Verfahren wird eine möglichst detaillierte Darstellung (analog zu einem Schaltplan) benötigt, in welcher der Status für alle relevanten Zwischenschritte des Verfahrens dargelegt ist.

Übergeordnet sind sinnvolle Dashboards und Reports zu überlegen, welche Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge aufzeigen.

Außerdem sollen Interessenten in der Lage sein, für sie bedeutsame Verfahren zu verfolgen und bei Statusänderungen automatisch informiert werden (WebAlert-Funktion).

Die Auswahl der richtigen Technologie im Hinblick auf leichte wart- und Erweiterbarkeit (unter Nutzung von Open-Source-Komponenten) ist ebenso bedeutsam wie die Auswahl von Lizenzmodellen (Software, Daten, …), die eine Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung nicht beeinträchtigen. Ähnlich relevant ist eine umfassende und detaillierte Dokumentation der Software.

Einige der beschriebenen Funktionen sind bereits entwickelt, müssen aber evaluiert und ggf. angepasst werden.

Angestrebt wird im Anschluss an das Projektende die Überführung der Lösung in die Gemeinnützigkeit, wodurch zukünftige Volksbeteiligungsverfahren in Berlin hiervon profitieren würden.

Motivation

Seit 1997 existiert in Berlin ein dreistufiges Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die Durchführung von Volksbegehren und Volksentscheiden. Volksbeteiligungsverfahren gehören zur Gruppe der direktdemokratischen Verfahren und erlauben den Wahlberechtigten, abseits von Wahlen Abstimmungen zu Sachthemen zu initiieren. Hierdurch haben sie die Möglichkeit, direkt politischen Einfluss auszuüben und Themen anzugehen, die vielleicht in der Tagespolitik nicht genügend beachtet wurden.

Volksbeteiligungsverfahren sind daher für die Ausübung des demokratischen Willens der Wahlberechtigten von hoher Bedeutung.

Im Zuge der fast 25-jährigen Geschichte der Berliner Volksbeteiligungsverfahren wurden einige Herausforderungen sichtbar, die bei einer entsprechenden Überwindung demokratieverstärkende Potenziale auslösen könnten.

Eine solche Herausforderung ist die fehlende Transparenz über alle laufenden und bisher durchgeführten Volksbeteiligungsverfahren. Aktuell ist es nur mit riesigem Aufwand möglich, Details über die abgeschlossenen Verfahren zu finden (Ergebnis, Dauer, Anzahl der Unterschriften, …). Ähnlich sieht es bei aktuellen Verfahren aus. Es gibt keine zentrale Anlaufstelle, an der ein Überblick über die laufenden Verfahren abgerufen werden kann. Vielmehr ist man dabei auf die Informationsbereitschaft der Initiatoren angewiesen, die oft weder vollständig noch aktuell ist. Des Weiteren fehlt eine einheitliche Darstellung, da jeder Initiator einen anderen Fokus auf die Informationspräsentation legt.

Diese Situation ist für die Interessierten, unabhängig davon ob es Initiatoren oder Wahlberechtigte sind, problematisch. Wahlberechtige etwa können nicht mit angemessenem Aufwand in Erfahrung bringen, welche Verfahren aktuell durchgeführt werden, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf eine mögliche Mitwirkung hat. Die Initiatoren wiederum müssen viel Aufwand in eine hinreichende Sichtbarkeit investieren. Zugleich haben sie kein umfassendes Verständnis dafür, welche Daten und Information in welcher Form von Interesse sein könnten.

Andere Gruppierungen, wie etwa Medien, würden von einer umfassenden Transparenz ebenso profitieren.

Die Motivation für dieses Softwareprojekt ist daher die wirksame Optimierung der Volksbeteiligungsverfahren des Landes Berlin durch die Herbeiführung von mehr Transparenz. Es ist daher eine Lösung notwendig, die zumindest den Status der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verfahren sichtbar macht. Die wichtigsten Kriterien sind hierbei Vollständigkeit und zentrale sowie einheitliche Verfügbarkeit der Daten.

Inhalte

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung und lauffähige Implementierung einer Webanwendung zur Status-Erfassung und -Visualisierung sowie Nachverfolgung von Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die NGO Mehr Demokratie (https://www.mehr-demokratie.de/).

Bereits im vergangenen Jahr (2021) wurde eine erste Version einer Web- und Mobile-Anwendung im Rahmen eines SW-Projektes und in Zusammenarbeit mit Mehr Demokratie entwickelt. Die Ergebnissoftware bestand aus drei Modulen: 

-          - Frontend WEB

-          - Frontend APP

-          - Backend

Diese Anwendung soll nun fertig entwickelt werden, unter anderem sind Web-Frontend und  Backend zusammenzuführen. Die APP-Frontend wird nach aktuellem Stand nicht benötigt. 

Abschließend soll die lauffähige Implementierung der Lösung in der Systemumgebung von Mehr Demokratie erfolgen. Zu beachten ist, dass bei einem erfolgreichen Projektabschluss Mehr Demokratie mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zur bedeutendsten Informationsquelle für Partizipationsverfahren mit entsprechender Sichtbarkeit aufsteigen würde. Aus diesen Gründen sind die Sicherheitsaspekte der Implementierung besonders zu beachten.   

Als Vorbereitung für die Entwicklungsarbeiten ist eine IST-Analyse bei Mehr Demokratie durchzuführen, um die technischen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen zu verstehen und die Softwareentwicklung danach ausrichten zu können.

Bezogen auf die Software ist zu beachten, dass die hierfür relevanten Daten über die einzelnen Volksbeteiligungsverfahren nicht automatisiert importiert werden können. Vielmehr sind sie manuell von den Usern (Initiatoren) einzupflegen. Ein entsprechendes Rechtemanagement soll dafür sorgen, dass die User über ein einheitliches Eingabeformular die notwendigen Daten eingeben und ihr eigenes Verfahren managen können. Des Weiteren soll es den Usern möglich sein, entsprechende Unterlagen und Nachweise hochzuladen und ihren Verfahren zuzuordnen (Dokumentenmanagement).

Die eingegebenen Daten sind dann in weiterer Folge einheitlich und automatisiert zu visualisieren. Auf der Ebene der einzelnen Verfahren wird eine möglichst detaillierte Darstellung (analog zu einem Schaltplan) benötigt, in welcher der Status für alle relevanten Zwischenschritte des Verfahrens dargelegt ist.

Übergeordnet sind sinnvolle Dashboards und Reports zu überlegen, welche Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge aufzeigen.

Außerdem sollen Interessenten in der Lage sein, für sie bedeutsame Verfahren zu verfolgen und bei Statusänderungen automatisch informiert werden (WebAlert-Funktion).

Die Auswahl der richtigen Technologie im Hinblick auf leichte wart- und Erweiterbarkeit (unter Nutzung von Open-Source-Komponenten) ist ebenso bedeutsam wie die Auswahl von Lizenzmodellen (Software, Daten, …), die eine Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung nicht beeinträchtigen. Ähnlich relevant ist eine umfassende und detaillierte Dokumentation der Software.

Einige der beschriebenen Funktionen sind bereits entwickelt, müssen aber evaluiert und ggf. angepasst werden.

Angestrebt wird im Anschluss an das Projektende die Überführung der Lösung in die Gemeinnützigkeit, wodurch zukünftige Volksbeteiligungsverfahren in Berlin hiervon profitieren würden.

Digitization stops at no one. But how do NGOs, associations or similar organizations without a large IT department actually digitize themselves? Are they forced to follow the big tech companies or are there alternatives?

In this software project we want to digitalize an area together with clubs of the German Alpine Association (DAV) or their youth.
An important aspect in the association is the rental of mountain sports equipment for the members and we want to support this area digitally.

As cooperation partners the (J)DAV Sektion Konstanz as well as the (J)DAV Sektion Berlin are ready and willing to use our IT solution.

The task is to create a web application with backend for rental, maintenance and inventory of mountaineering equipment. There are some special features, such as special requirements for the rental of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as ropes or helmets.
The process so far is illustrated by means of personas and use cases and allows an immediate start into the project.

Depending on the group size and progress in the project, we will additionally look at optional topics. This includes, for example:

* Developing an app for Android and iOS.
* Design and testing of marking of mountaineering equipment using QR codes and NFC chips.
* Recognition of QR codes and NFC chips and their information processing.
* Creation of a knowledge database with information from manufacturers of mountain sports equipment (using web crawling).
* Developing alternative solutions without a web server.

The software project will be characterized by collaboration with the appropriate partners and agile software development. A big challenge is to develop a secure, maintainable solution that fits into the IT infrastructure of an association without a large IT department. An open source license (e.g. MIT, BSD) is proposed for further development after the software project and for use.

Coding IxD: Designing Neoanalog Artefacts

In this course, we co-educate computer scientists and product designers. Beyond experiencing interdisciplinary work, we want students to envision interactive systems that are intelligent: by this, we mean an intelligence through code that is carefully using material, form, and context, while profoundly respecting both human capabilities and vulnerabilities.

We understand this course as experimental space, where different perspectives meet, exchange, and evolve. Each semester, based on small project teams of up to five members, students are challenged to examine a specific application context. Within this context, the teams envision a new application or product concept.

We guide this process through various carefully tuned methods that are used to spark their ideas. Students iterate through several rounds of ideation and refine their concept in different prototype versions. The most compelling or promising interaction concept, the one that allows grasping the quality and essence of the product concept is implemented in a working prototype.

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced designers and computer scientists but also by guest experts that provide feedback to the various design iterations. If needed, special workshops are organized to cover specific topics ranging from prototyping to project management. The whole course is evaluated continuously to enhance our methodological toolbox.

This course offering is a cooperation of the r Human-Centered Computing Research Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Product Design Department at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (KHB).

In this proseminar we will discuss a selection of articles that have been published in the Software Engineering in Society Track (ICSE-SEIS) within the last years. Topics include diversity, sustainability or privacy, but always with reference to software engineering.

The students choose one of these articles and prepare a presentation (in German or English) in which they present and discuss it besides two relevant and accessible sources. Attention should be paid to the credibility and relevance of the article / study results. Afterwards, the presentation and the corresponding article will be discussed by the seminar participants.

The content of the presentation and the results of the discussion shall be compiled in an paper. In the best case, this paper will be written in parallel to the preparation of the presentation and will then only be revised - taking into account the feedback of the seminar participants. The paper should contain at least 4 pages of pure text (without graphics; the paper with graphics must be correspondingly longer) and will be handed in at the latest 4 weeks after the presentation.

Interactive Intelligent Systems (IIS) are interactive systems that use artificial intelligence technologies (e.g., from natural language processing). In this seminar, we are concerned with the design, realization, or evaluation of these systems. We combine the complementary perspectives on interactive intelligent systems by considering the used AI technology, user interaction with the system, or both aspects at once. Interactive Intelligent Systems comprise a wide variety of systems or approaches such as AI-infused systems, recommender systems, mixed-initiative user interfaces, or intelligent agents.

Each term, we deal with another particular topic related to the field of Interactive Intelligent Systems field. However, in any case, we focus on a human-centered perspective. We emphasize the interaction between the technical system and the human user in order to explore existing capabilities and limitations in the field of human-computer interaction.

At the beginning of the semester, we provide a general introduction to this year's particular topic. Building on this, we will explore existing approaches, methods, and implementations in the form of student talks, and create a mindmap of the particular topic collaboratively. Each participant is expected to prepare independently, present, and discuss their topic with the class. Based on the results of the discussion, students have to create a written scientific report, which will be evaluated.

This is a reseach seminar: normally the presentations are supposed to advance current research projects. Thus, there are, generally speaking, three possible types of topics:

• published or current research projects from one of the areas in which our software engineering group works
• especially good specific research projects (or other knowledge) from other areas of software engineering or adjacent areas of computer science
• basis topics from important areas of software engineering or adjacent disciplines such as psychology, sociology, pedagogics, economics as well as their methods.

There is no exact restriction of topics though; almost anything is possible.

Description:

This seminar covers different topics from the research area of autonomous cars. We will focus on questions which can be the basis for Bachelor or Master theses as:

vision based person or vehicle recognition, map generation from trajectories, V2V and V2X communication, object tracking and prediction, sensory data fusion, localization using map matching, recognition of drivable areas and free spaces using stereo vision, path planning with A*, RRT, potential fields, automatic sensor calibration, map data formats.

Students can propose interesting topics, too. The seminar will be taught as a block course.

Coding IxD: Designing Neoanalog Artefacts

In this course, we co-educate computer scientists and product designers. Beyond experiencing interdisciplinary work, we want students to envision interactive systems that are intelligent: by this, we mean an intelligence through code that is carefully using material, form, and context, while profoundly respecting both human capabilities and vulnerabilities.

We understand this course as experimental space, where different perspectives meet, exchange, and evolve. Each semester, based on small project teams of up to five members, students are challenged to examine a specific application context. Within this context, the teams envision a new application or product concept.

We guide this process through various carefully tuned methods that are used to spark their ideas. Students iterate through several rounds of ideation and refine their concept in different prototype versions. The most compelling or promising interaction concept, the one that allows grasping the quality and essence of the product concept is implemented in a working prototype.

Students are accompanied by a team of experienced designers and computer scientists but also by guest experts that provide feedback to the various design iterations. If needed, special workshops are organized to cover specific topics ranging from prototyping to project management. The whole course is evaluated continuously to enhance our methodological toolbox.

This course offering is a cooperation of the r Human-Centered Computing Research Group at the Institute of Computer Science at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Product Design Department at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin (KHB).

Mixed groups of master and bachelor students will either implement an independent project or are part of a larger project in the area of artifical intelligence and semantic AI technologies. Topic of the software project in WS22/23: Further development of a demonstrator for AI methods to recognize online hate speech.

The goal of this course is to acquire the background of spatial databases, the kernel of Geographic Systems. The major aspects that will be handled are: modeling and querying geospatial information, spatial access methods (SAMs), data representation, basic operations (mostly from computational geometry), and optimization. Insights into current applications such as location-based services (e.g., navigation systems) will also be given. Knowledge in databases is necessary. This course encompasses: formal lectures, exercises, as well as a practical project with PostGIS.

This course teaches agile methods (Scrum and XP) and open source tools using a single semester-long project. It takes place online and across multiple universities.

Topics covered are:

• Agile methods and related software development processes
• Scrum roles, process practices, including product and engineering management
• Technical practices like refactoring, continuous integration, and test-driven development
• Principles and best practices of open source software development

The project is a software development project in which each student team works with an industry partner who provides the idea for the project. This is a practical hands-on experience. Students take on the role of a software developer. In this role, they estimate and evaluate the effort of requirements and implement them in the project.

Students will be organized into teams of 7-8 people, combining product owners with software developers. An industry partner will provide requirements to be worked out in detail by the product owners and to be realized by the software developers. The available projects will be presented in the run-up to the course.

The course consists of 90min lectures (participation voluntary) followed by a 90min team meeting (participation mandatory).

When studying Computer Science at university you mainly focus on concepts. This approach generally makes sense as these conceps are far more persistent and applicable in a broader sense than concrete details would be. Many details, however, which are important for concrete software development, are falling by the wayside. The course is supposed to reduce this deficit.

In it we mainly focus on concepts too, but always only on those which directly have to do with software development, and make sure to apply them precisely, personally in practice -- reflecting its use jointly (something which distinguisdes this course from most other software projects).

The concepts dealt with and practiced may be assigned to three different but closeky connected spheres:

• software development and structuring (object-oriented) Softwareentwurf und -strukturierung (und zwar objektorientiert)
• approaches (for example in the areas prototyping, automatisation, incremental improvement)
• personality development (aspects like consistency, responsibility, communicational skills)

Worst-case analysis of algorithms is one of the cornerstones of theoretical computer science. At the same time, there is a growing discrepancy between the theoretical worst-case guarantees we can prove and the practical performance of algorithms observed on real inputs. This is particularly true in fields such as machine learning, SAT solving, and numerical optimization, where problems known to be hard in the worst-case are routinely solved to great effect on large real-world inputs.

In this seminar, we look at different strategies for dealing with this situation, and more fine-grained and nuanced techniques for the analysis of algorithms. The discussions will be mostly based on chapters of the recent book: "Beyond the Worst-Case Analysis of Algorithms" by T. Roughgarden, Cambridge University Press, 2020.

Requirement: ALP3/HA or similar algorithmic background, mathematical maturity.

Seminar Technische Informatik on Internet of Things & Security

In large part, the Internet of Things (IoT) will consist of interconnecting low-end devices with very small memory capacity (a few kBytes) and limited energy consumption (1000 times less than a RaspberryPi).
The IoT promises a new world of applications, but also brings up specific challenges in terms of programmability, energy efficiency, networking and security.
After an introductory session at the start of the term, MSc students will pick a topic related to current technologies in the field of Internet of Things & Security, and write a report (IEEE LaTex template, 12 A4 pages including figures and references, single column, 1.5 spacing, 11-point font) discussing corresponding questions. At the end of the term, the participants present their results in the form a short talk (20 minutes + 10 minutes Q&A) in a meeting, which will also include cross-reviewing of student's reports. During the term, there will be deadlines for status reports, but no weekly meetings of the complete seminar group.

This seminar focuses on several aspects of technical Computer Science. You are also very welcome to suggest your own research topic that is closely related to technical Computer Science. You can work on your topic exclusively or in a small group of 2-3 students. But then, it has to be apparent who contributed what part to the seminar paper.

It is possible to combine this seminar with the software project Telematics. Then, the theoretical foundations of the topic are dealt with in the scientific seminar paper and implemented in practice in the software project. Please note that the seminar paper is not supposed to deal with details of the implementation and that you are still obliged to write an accurate documentation of the software project in written form. 

Concerning the schedule: This seminar takes place during the semester. There are only a few meetings, but these are mandatory. On the first meeting (03.11.2020), the topic list will be handed out and discussed. Please prepare a short (2-3 minutes) overview of your own topic suggestion if you would like to include it in the seminar. On the next week (10.11.2020), the topics will be assigned. After that there will be 3 presentation dates in total: the topic presentation (01.12.2021), a short interim presentation (12.01.2021) and the final presentation (23.02.2021). There will be no further meetings beyond that. This semester, all meetings will take place as video conferences with Webex.

There is a number of widely accepted methodologies, tools and practices which can be applied to the variety of routine tasks and challenges within projects. The Project Management Institute has collected and systematized knowledge about project management and published it in the “Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK Guide)” as an ANSI standard.

Based on the PMBOK as a systematic blueprint this lecture covers the most important processes of project management throughout the typical lifecycle of a project. An accompanying case study as well as sample real life cases help understanding theoretical concepts.

There is a wide variety of software tools supporting project work. The lecture also covers typical tools one would use during a project. We will look more deeply at Microsoft Project as one of the most widespread project management tools.

A compiler is a piece of software that translates a computer program from a higher programming language to another programming language (usually machine code). In general, this translation proceeds in several phases, the most important being lexical analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, and code generations. Using lexical and syntactic analysis, we can translate the source program into a representation that is suitable for processing by a computer (abstract syntax tree). This intermediate representation serves as a starting point for optimization and code generation. The methods presented in this class can be applied in many fields of computer science. Motivation

Seit 1997 existiert in Berlin ein dreistufiges Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die Durchführung von Volksbegehren und Volksentscheiden. Volksbeteiligungsverfahren gehören zur Gruppe der direktdemokratischen Verfahren und erlauben den Wahlberechtigten, abseits von Wahlen Abstimmungen zu Sachthemen zu initiieren. Hierdurch haben sie die Möglichkeit, direkt politischen Einfluss auszuüben und Themen anzugehen, die vielleicht in der Tagespolitik nicht genügend beachtet wurden.

Volksbeteiligungsverfahren sind daher für die Ausübung des demokratischen Willens der Wahlberechtigten von hoher Bedeutung.

Im Zuge der fast 25-jährigen Geschichte der Berliner Volksbeteiligungsverfahren wurden einige Herausforderungen sichtbar, die bei einer entsprechenden Überwindung demokratieverstärkende Potenziale auslösen könnten.

Eine solche Herausforderung ist die fehlende Transparenz über alle laufenden und bisher durchgeführten Volksbeteiligungsverfahren. Aktuell ist es nur mit riesigem Aufwand möglich, Details über die abgeschlossenen Verfahren zu finden (Ergebnis, Dauer, Anzahl der Unterschriften, …). Ähnlich sieht es bei aktuellen Verfahren aus. Es gibt keine zentrale Anlaufstelle, an der ein Überblick über die laufenden Verfahren abgerufen werden kann. Vielmehr ist man dabei auf die Informationsbereitschaft der Initiatoren angewiesen, die oft weder vollständig noch aktuell ist. Des Weiteren fehlt eine einheitliche Darstellung, da jeder Initiator einen anderen Fokus auf die Informationspräsentation legt.

Diese Situation ist für die Interessierten, unabhängig davon ob es Initiatoren oder Wahlberechtigte sind, problematisch. Wahlberechtige etwa können nicht mit angemessenem Aufwand in Erfahrung bringen, welche Verfahren aktuell durchgeführt werden, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf eine mögliche Mitwirkung hat. Die Initiatoren wiederum müssen viel Aufwand in eine hinreichende Sichtbarkeit investieren. Zugleich haben sie kein umfassendes Verständnis dafür, welche Daten und Information in welcher Form von Interesse sein könnten.

Andere Gruppierungen, wie etwa Medien, würden von einer umfassenden Transparenz ebenso profitieren.

Die Motivation für dieses Softwareprojekt ist daher die wirksame Optimierung der Volksbeteiligungsverfahren des Landes Berlin durch die Herbeiführung von mehr Transparenz. Es ist daher eine Lösung notwendig, die zumindest den Status der aktuellen und zukünftigen Verfahren sichtbar macht. Die wichtigsten Kriterien sind hierbei Vollständigkeit und zentrale sowie einheitliche Verfügbarkeit der Daten.

Inhalte

Gegenstand dieses Projekts ist die Entwicklung und lauffähige Implementierung einer Webanwendung zur Status-Erfassung und -Visualisierung sowie Nachverfolgung von Volksbeteiligungsverfahren für die NGO Mehr Demokratie (https://www.mehr-demokratie.de/).

Bereits im vergangenen Jahr (2021) wurde eine erste Version einer Web- und Mobile-Anwendung im Rahmen eines SW-Projektes und in Zusammenarbeit mit Mehr Demokratie entwickelt. Die Ergebnissoftware bestand aus drei Modulen: 

-          - Frontend WEB

-          - Frontend APP

-          - Backend

Diese Anwendung soll nun fertig entwickelt werden, unter anderem sind Web-Frontend und  Backend zusammenzuführen. Die APP-Frontend wird nach aktuellem Stand nicht benötigt. 

Abschließend soll die lauffähige Implementierung der Lösung in der Systemumgebung von Mehr Demokratie erfolgen. Zu beachten ist, dass bei einem erfolgreichen Projektabschluss Mehr Demokratie mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit zur bedeutendsten Informationsquelle für Partizipationsverfahren mit entsprechender Sichtbarkeit aufsteigen würde. Aus diesen Gründen sind die Sicherheitsaspekte der Implementierung besonders zu beachten.   

Als Vorbereitung für die Entwicklungsarbeiten ist eine IST-Analyse bei Mehr Demokratie durchzuführen, um die technischen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen zu verstehen und die Softwareentwicklung danach ausrichten zu können.

Bezogen auf die Software ist zu beachten, dass die hierfür relevanten Daten über die einzelnen Volksbeteiligungsverfahren nicht automatisiert importiert werden können. Vielmehr sind sie manuell von den Usern (Initiatoren) einzupflegen. Ein entsprechendes Rechtemanagement soll dafür sorgen, dass die User über ein einheitliches Eingabeformular die notwendigen Daten eingeben und ihr eigenes Verfahren managen können. Des Weiteren soll es den Usern möglich sein, entsprechende Unterlagen und Nachweise hochzuladen und ihren Verfahren zuzuordnen (Dokumentenmanagement).

Die eingegebenen Daten sind dann in weiterer Folge einheitlich und automatisiert zu visualisieren. Auf der Ebene der einzelnen Verfahren wird eine möglichst detaillierte Darstellung (analog zu einem Schaltplan) benötigt, in welcher der Status für alle relevanten Zwischenschritte des Verfahrens dargelegt ist.

Übergeordnet sind sinnvolle Dashboards und Reports zu überlegen, welche Entwicklungen und Zusammenhänge aufzeigen.

Außerdem sollen Interessenten in der Lage sein, für sie bedeutsame Verfahren zu verfolgen und bei Statusänderungen automatisch informiert werden (WebAlert-Funktion).

Die Auswahl der richtigen Technologie im Hinblick auf leichte wart- und Erweiterbarkeit (unter Nutzung von Open-Source-Komponenten) ist ebenso bedeutsam wie die Auswahl von Lizenzmodellen (Software, Daten, …), die eine Nutzung und Weiterentwicklung nicht beeinträchtigen. Ähnlich relevant ist eine umfassende und detaillierte Dokumentation der Software.

Einige der beschriebenen Funktionen sind bereits entwickelt, müssen aber evaluiert und ggf. angepasst werden.

Angestrebt wird im Anschluss an das Projektende die Überführung der Lösung in die Gemeinnützigkeit, wodurch zukünftige Volksbeteiligungsverfahren in Berlin hiervon profitieren würden.

In this software project we want to digitalize an area together with clubs of the German Alpine Association (DAV) or their youth.
An important aspect in the association is the rental of mountain sports equipment for the members and we want to support this area digitally.

As cooperation partners the (J)DAV Sektion Konstanz as well as the (J)DAV Sektion Berlin are ready and willing to use our IT solution.

The task is to create a web application with backend for rental, maintenance and inventory of mountaineering equipment. There are some special features, such as special requirements for the rental of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as ropes or helmets.
The process so far is illustrated by means of personas and use cases and allows an immediate start into the project.

Depending on the group size and progress in the project, we will additionally look at optional topics. This includes, for example:

* Developing an app for Android and iOS.
* Design and testing of marking of mountaineering equipment using QR codes and NFC chips.
* Recognition of QR codes and NFC chips and their information processing.
* Creation of a knowledge database with information from manufacturers of mountain sports equipment (using web crawling).
* Developing alternative solutions without a web server.

The software project will be characterized by collaboration with the appropriate partners and agile software development. A big challenge is to develop a secure, maintainable solution that fits into the IT infrastructure of an association without a large IT department. An open source license (e.g. MIT, BSD) is proposed for further development after the software project and for use.

The technologies used will be:

The schedule will be as follows for organizational reasons:

* Block event: 10/5 to 10/17.
* Semester-long event: 10/17 to 12/18.
* During the project premises in the AG Secure Identity will be used.
* Final presentation: first or second week of January
* Regular meetings with project partners to demonstrate prototypes, etc.

Prerequisites are:

* Attendance of the Software Engineering course (or equivalent).
* Independent familiarization or experience with Git(-lab).
* Independent familiarization with frameworks for Python or Flutter.
* Interest in working on an open source project that will be used later.
* Own notebooks
