We will review basic concepts of lineal and non-linear approximation theory and their impact on the numerical analysis of elliptic partial differential equations (pdes) such as mesh-independent convergence of multigrid methods, quasioptimality of adaptive finite elements,
exponential convergence of reduced basis methods, and recent relations to data science. Basic knowledge on elliptic (pdes) and finite elements is expected.
