How small can we make the smallest magnetic bit? – This is one of the crucial questions in the development of more powerful data storage media.

The smallest magnetic moment you may think of, can be carried by a single electron or a single atom. However, the orientation of the magnetic moment is not defined without breaking symmetry. This requires some anisotropic environment. Furthermore, a magnetic bit needs to be stable over time, readable and writable. The challenge of creating the smallest stable bit is still on race and requires substantial research. In the last years, tremendous efforts with substantial advances have been made.

In this seminar, the students will present papers on the recent literature. The goal is to gain an understanding of the physical basics and measurement techniques and to discuss future prospects.
