Content:

This lecture will address the following topics:

  • Classical and stochastic homogenisation of elliptic pdes (periodically oscillating coefficients)
  • Multiscale finite elements
  • Ritz-Galerkin methods for stochastic elliptic pdes (polynomial chaos)
  • Heterogeneous multiscale methods
The lecture is accompanied by exercises, which are highly recommended. Besides assignments of theoretical problems there will be also assignments concerning the application of modern numerical algorithms. Furthermore, this should be a place to discuss specific topic of the lecture in more detail.

Target audience:

This lecture is a continuation of the preceding course on "Numerical methods for partial differential equations (Numerik III)". It is intended to broaden the way towards a master thesis in the field of computational PDEs.

Prerequisites:

Participants should have some knowledge about PDEs and their numerical approximation by finite elements as provided, e.g., by the preceing course on "Numerical methods for partial differential equations (Numerik III)".

The course presents numerical methods for problems from fluid dynamics where the convective transport dominates (which is the standard situation in applications). Important topics are stabilized finite element methods and adaptive methods.
